"There's always something on in Clon"
West Cork Industrial Heritage lecture
Dúchas Clonakilty Heritage recommences its winter/spring lecture series next Thursday 28th October at 8pm, when an illustrated talk entitled, “The Industrial Heritage of West Cork" will be delivered over zoom by Dr. Colin Rynne of UCC.
The lecture will look back on the extraordinary industrial heritage of West Cork, from its nationally significant copper mines and slate quarries, to its almost forgotten linen industry, food-processing industries such as Deasy's Brewery in Clonakilty, along with flour and oat mills, such as Castleview Mills, also near Clonakilty, which were important during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Many of the buildings and landscapes associated with these industries have come down to us in a generally good state of preservation. The challenge for future generations, however, is to maintain this.
Dr Colin Rynne lectures on post-medieval and industrial archaeology in the Department of Archaeology UCC. His publications include, “The Industrial Archaeology of Cork City and its Environs" (1999) and “
Dúchas Clonakilty Heritage members have been sent the log-in details for the lecture via email.
