Music is considered the life blood of every Irish person; it informs our culture, our history, how we socialise & even how we speak. Clonakilty in particular has a special affinity for this magical art.
Whether it’s traditional sessions in Clon’s many pubs, local and international acts in its venues, gigs at world famous DeBarras Folk Club, Shanley’s Piano Bar or one of the many festivals happening throughout the year, Clonakilty has something for all music fans.
In 1972 a unique event occurred in ‘Clon’ that would cement this relationship forever. Tired and down beat from his ongoing professional disputes with the music industry, Noel Redding the original Bass player with ‘The Hendrix Experience’ re-located to West Cork to take stock of his past & plot his future.
With Clonakilty as his home for the next 27 years of his life, Noel had a talismanic effect on the area attracting many other musical legends to this seaside town. David Bowie, Eric Bell (Thin Lizzy), Paul McCartney, Donovan, Paddy Keenan (the Bothy Band), Roy Harper, Mitch Mitchell (the Hendrix Experience drummer) & so many more all paraded a technicolor trail of music & musicianship through the local pubs, hotels & imaginations!
As a result Noel’s impact on his adopted home in West Cork was as monumental as it was on the international stage. To this day his musical legacy continues in Clonakilty through the venues he performed in, the festivals he helped to inspire and the abundance of musical talent that he fostered and attracted to the locality.
