The Old Market Square site will claim back its former space and function. It is time to look at one of the most beautiful and important sites of Clonakilty and try to regain its main role of “public space” as part of the Fealge River Landscape Development 2000-2010. New modern offices for Cork County Council have been designed in accordance with current renewable energy standards. The new building will be connected to the Old Mill Library building through a glass bridge. The choice of materials for the new Civic Centre comes from the analysis and interpretation of local traditional buildings in Clonakilty. The design is based on the use of new modern technologies with efficient insulation standards and low maintenance properties. The target is to avoid breaking the natural equilibrium of the urban context, and the small scale of the proposed building structure will be as light and transparent using glass roof and facades. These are necessary for brightness and natural ventilation purposes. The New Civic Centre will be environmentally friendly and very simple and sharp looking building. |

| A pedestrian board walk route will span along the River Fealge connecting the opposite car park and will create a direct and safe access to the new building. Phase II, placed on site after fire station relocation; will include new offices for Clonakilty Town Council and a public Auditorium for the community. The main entrance will become a landscaped square edging the existing stone wall that will be retained as town garden walls. Limestone paving will be extended to Kent Street as an optional occasional pedestrian area. | |
